Cripple, On Being a

Society does not look well upon cripples. They are seen as despicable, peculiar, and a nuisance to those able bodied people that have to accommodate them. Mairs makes a great point when she said, “Some realities do not obey the dictates of language” (883). People hate having to bend over backwards to make sure “handicapped” people are taken care of. They make sure that the disabled person is comfortable and cared for and that is why they become bitter towards the person who is not the same as everyone else or their mother.

Have you ever kicked a cripple? It’s not as fun as it would seem. I did it once, a long time ago, and as Mairs put it in her essay, “I made the choice a number of years ago, without thinking, unaware of my motives for doing so.” (883). My sentiments exactly. I see it as similar to doing drugs… you should try it at least once before you knock it. Then, you can have the experience and memory to say, “Yes, I HAVE kicked a cripple.”

The essay was originally about a woman and her struggle with accepting her crippledness... this is what it got out of the whole thing.
